Rewind of class English 21007:
Writing for Engineering course reflection
Writing for Engineering class is an essential class for those who are majoring in different engineering programs. This is such a valuable course and Professor Adam Bubrow has made it more interesting and enjoyable by applying his great teaching strategies. I’m very glad for having Professor Bubrow since throughout this course I have learned so many things that will help me in my future. Professor Bubrow often says, “What’s out there? The World.” He used his teaching techniques to prepare us to face the real-world situation. By saying real-world situation I’m meaning that the materials we have learned from the class, we can use it when we will apply for jobs.
During this course, we have done some projects and writings. Some important writings and projects that we have done are writing a resume and cover letter, lab report, interview report, group proposal, technical description. The first task was writing an introduction paragraph. Through this writing, I have learned how to make writing purposeful and for the audience. The audience and purpose idea helps us in any kind of writing since when we write, we write it for the audience. So it is very important to make our writing clear and readable for the audience which is our purpose.
The next thing that we did was writing a resume and cover letter. This is one of the important things that we have learned during this course. It is very essential to have a resume and cover letter when we apply for a job. This is the way of showing and branding ourselves. We also used the audience and purpose writing strategy to write it. Professor Bubrow has taught us how to write an effective resume and cover letter.
Then comes the lab report which we have done during the course. The lab report is basically a research and analytical writing that consists of data, observe, and explanation. In this class, we all did the dice rolling experiment where we have used the information literacy, citation, and synthesis. The reason behind using information literacy is that we had to find a scholarly reviewed article in the CCNY online library to compare our experiment results. Besides, we also have learned how to write an effective lab report.
After the lab report, we had to make an interview report. Basically, to make the interview report I had to sit with a professional engineer and took a face to face interview. The interview was fun because of the guy that I had the interview was really intelligent and professional. This assignment gave me a great chance to sit with an engineer and hear from him also about his area of job. After the interview, I had to write a report where I gave an informative description of the whole interview.
The next thing I did after the interview report was a group proposal. Since it was a group assignment, I collaborate with other members of our group to finish this assignment. Basically, the assignment was a proposal of something later which was presented to the whole class. We used synthesis, technology such as Google, blackboard to finish this assignment. Through the presentation, we have tried to impress the class with our proposal which was about making a parking space for students.
Finally comes the technical description assignment. This was an individual assignment where individual students worked on different topics. For instance, my topic was motors. Through this assignment, I basically gave the basic description of motors, for instance, the function of AC and DC motors and the motors that fall under them. Then I present it in front of the class. I used drafting, reading, citation, and technology to finish this assignment.
In conclusion, throughout this course, I have learned more than I expected. Professor Bubrow made the class so easy for students. His friendly behavior and teaching strategies made the class much interesting. I strongly believe that things that I have learned from this class will help me in my future classes when it is about writing anything.
